——“Through Hardships to the Stars (ad astra per aspera)”

意為「Through Hardships to the Stars」,——穿越險阻,奔向群星。

The phonograph Voyager Golden Records which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977, contain sounds and images to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them.

The record contains 115 images plus a calibration image to portray the earth and the human being such as photos of various creatures, chart of math physics chemistry and biology, DNA constituents and X-ray etc, and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind, rain, thunder, volcanoes, mud pots, and animal sounds including the songs of birds and whales, and the noise of vehicles, heartbeats and kiss, even pulsar…; and spoken greetings in 55 languages, such as a female voice speaking “How’s everyone? We all very much wish to meet you, if you’re free please come and visit” in mandarin. The record additionally features 90-min musical selections from different cultures and eras, including “Flowing Streams” by Bo Ya from ancient China and “Johnny B. Goode” by Chuck Berry.

Included within the Sounds of Earth audio portion of the Golden Record is a track containing the message “PER ASPERA AD ASTRA” in Morse Code. Translated from Latin proverb, it means, Through Hardships to the Stars.

The audio contents of Golden Records have been uploaded to Soundcloud.com, therefore we can experience this time capsule, and know that somewhere out there the records are traveling currently carried by the Voyager spacecraft which is heading toward within 1.6 light-years of the star Gliese 445, currently in the constellation Camelopardalis, in about 40,000 years.

As an artist and illustrator, Guan Chun was inspired by Golden Records and listened to the tracks over and over again when drawing her new series of artworks “Interstellar Voyager”, and held a crossover project with her friend ceramic artist Chu Yang and presented on ceramics which were fired with artist’s imagination of the stars, and the desire of exploring the ultimate secrets of the cosmos. Chinese Ceramics show a continuous development since thousands years ago, and are one of the most significant forms of Chinese art. Therefore, Guan Chun hopes that if some pieces of this ceramics series were found by any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or future humans in the dust, they will know the artistic feelings, humorous and good will of a ordinary human.

“This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.

We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe.”

This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.

This Voyager spacecraft was constructed by the United States of America. We are a community of 240 million human beings among the more than 4 billion who inhabit the planet Earth. We human beings are still divided into nation states, but these states are rapidly becoming a single global civilization.

We cast this message into the cosmos. It is likely to survive a billion years into our future, when our civilization is profoundly altered and the surface of the Earth may be vastly changed. Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some–perhaps many–may have inhabited planets and spacefaring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message:

This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe.
